It can be really sweet, or it can be screwed up beyond belief, and it can run the gamut in between, and those are all fun and interesting things to explore. Personally, in my *main* AU, the one I'm most invested in, they do tend to be more affectionate and trusting and protective, but it took a hell of a lot to get them there *coughzombieapocalypsecough*.
