and uses his superior size and weight to do what he'd never have considered before....He physically drags his partner, halfheartedly struggling the entire way, back to the ship.

This! :) Daniel needs to do this so much, because damnit, apparently small hints doesn't work on Walter well (but then again Dan is half in denial), I really wish we got to see his break down when he sees the blood in the snow in canon.

I really love the zombie genre, and how much it echoes irl plague, especially science zombies as you have written it here.

IRL, survivors of Ebola are still carriers...and at the height of SARS in Hong Kong, the medical profession was stigmatized, as did those who had recovered from it. I think I remember a column by a reporter who was afraid of the woman being interviewed, and wondering if the woman was deliberately playing on his/her fear, speaking softly so he/she would have to lean close within couching range to listen...before remembering the permanent damage to lungs and vocal cords.

Not my doctor, but one of my relative had a doctor who actually got SARS during the epidemic, and her patients switched en masse, even after she recovered. The relative kept the doctor though, admiring her dedication, even though her physical state is definitely diminished now.
