Yes, that ostracism of plague-carriers etc is a large part of the social fabric I was trying to weave here; thats why I went with epidemic/disease related terminology, calling them carriers etc. because yeah, sane or not, they've still got this pretty nasty virus just under the skin and how do the uninformed masses react to that, usually?
Exactly as you described above.
I think it gets better in this verse as time goes on, but mid-outbreak like this they were just way too worked up and paranoid and afraid to take any chances.
